Weekend Schedule

The students enrolled in the DMS program will be trained in the following areas:

Introduction to Imaging: Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Terminology, Radiology,

Cross Sectional Anatomy, scanning planes, and technology mathematics.

· Abdominal Ultrasound and Superficial Structures
· Obstetric and Gynecology
· Vascular Ultrasound
· Physics and Instrumentation and knobology

Two days of each week will be dedicated to lecture and two days will be dedicated to laboratory work. The lab will consist of learning all protocols, training in the use of diagnostic ultrasound equipment and scanning techniques,

patient assesment, patient history, laboratory values and initial impression.

Each student is rotated into an externship advanced preparatory course and placed at an externship site upon completion of their didactic training.

The student must attend and successfully pass all five (5) modules, meet the attendance requirements, be able to pass all scanning competency testing, in order to meet graduation requirements:

1. Introduction to Imaging Science.  This module is the first course of entry, and covers anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, patient care, basic math skills, various scanning planes pertaining to diagnostic imaging, understanding the 10 body systems and an introduction to Radiology.

2. ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND:

Anatomy, Physiology and pathophysiology of the abdominal cavity will be instructed in the following organs: liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, kidneys, aorta, inferior vena cava, abdominal vascularture, thyroid, testes, breast, prostate and musculo-skeletal ultrasound. Students will be abel to contrast and compare normal ultrasound anatomy and be able to recongize abnormal pathology of the abdomen.

3. OBSTETRIC AND GYNECOLOGY:

This course begins with normal female anatomy, congenital variants, contrasting and comparing endovaginal scanning with pelvic scanning and presentation of pathology. The second protion of this couse begins with early pregnancy, obstetric protocols, obstetric pathology, and congential abnormalities as well as all the related terminology, and understanding and becoming competent using biometric measurements. In addition, the student will be taught normal and abnormal pelvic ultrasound, pelvic anatomy, the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and adnexal regions.

4. VASCULAR ULTRASOUND:

This module will cover scanning techniques of the vascular system, including carotid arteries, arterial ultrasound of the extremities and venous studies of the lower extremities. The student will also learn to perform Doppler ultrasound, including color flow imaging, analysis, and evaluation of waveforms.

5. PHYSICS AND INSTRUMENTATION:

This course explains how diagnostic ultrasound physics works. The students will learn instrument performance techniques, measurement safety, risk factors, and the theory of diagnostic ultrasound physics. Emphasis will be placed on information and techniques necessary for the ARDMS registry examination.
