Weekend Schedule

The goal of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program is to thoroughly prepare students for the tasks and responsibilities of an entry level MRI technologist. WCUI accomplishes this objective by combining instruction with laboratory hands-on-training in a hospital and in various imaging facilities. The MRI program at West Coast Ultrasound Institute is approved by the ARMRIT.

  • "Upon completion of the MRI program, graduates are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) – www.armrit.org National Certification examination. "

The student must attend and successfully pass all three (3) Modules in order to meet the graduation requirements.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Imaging

This course is a three (3) month preparatory class for entering the imaging modalities of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

The student enrolled will be trained in the following areas:

Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Terminology, Patient Care, Basic Math skills, Various scanning planes pertaining to diagnostic imaging, understanding the 10 body systems, and performing basic assessment skills such as CPR, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and first aid.

Module 1: MRI Principles, Physics and Fundamentals

This module is designed to introduce the technologist to the basics. The MRI signal, the T1 and T2 recovery and delay times, pulse timing parameters, the larmor equation, images artifacts, flow, MRI contrast agents and digital images.

Module 2: MRI Sectional Anatomy

This portion of the course deals with anatomic structures, presentation and application of MRI, comparison of normal anatomy with pathology, understanding and recognizing MRI case studies. MRI positioning, MRI nomenclature, cranial anatomy, neck, spine, abdomen, pelvis, extremities and biologic effects of MRI.

Module 3: Clinical Externship

The student is placed in a hospital or out-patient imaging center for 1000 clinical hours to get hands-on experience for non ARRT / CRT technologists.  Here theory is put to practice and the technique for Magnetic Resonance Imaging is perfected.  ARRT / CRT technologists have a clinical externship of only 240 hours.
