PHOENIX, Arizona – On Saturday, February 28, West Coast Ultrasound Institute (WCUI) and Ultrasound Institute Medical Group (UIMG) joined forces to offer free cardiovascular scans to the community.  Approximately 200 screenings took place at the clinic, located at 4250 E. Camelback Road in Phoenix.  Patients received non-diagnostic screenings of abdominal aortas, echocardiograms, carotid aortas and blood pressure checks at no charge throughout the day.

Campus Director George Fitzpatrick recognized the combined work of approximately 30 volunteers at the event, including 5 clinic staff, 5 school faculty, 10 students, and 10 externs/alumni.  “It was a great event, a great experience for all the volunteers, run very smoothly and professionally,” Fitzpatrick said.  Faculty supervised the students.

Clinic Manager, sonographer April Miers agreed.  “We thought it went just wonderfully, everything was well organized.  It was steady throughout the day, patients got through in a timely manner with no waiting.”  As a non-diagnostic screening event, Miers said they did see some pathology but nothing concerning.  “The patients all enjoyed the experience.” Miers said.

Externship Coordinator Patti Marmol, who worked with externship and senior students during the event, noted the importance of promoting heart awareness.  “As an echo tech, community outreach is so important, and the fact that we could provide free scans to the community is wonderful.”  She encouraged each of the students to continue their volunteer efforts in the future.
