Vocational Nursing

The Vocational Nursing Program will prepare the student as an entry-level health care provider who is responsible for rendering basic nursing care. The program provides theory, technical skills, pharmacology, and off-site clinical nursing experience.

The students enrolled in the VN program will be trained in the following areas:

  • Nursing Fundamentals
  • Medical/Surgical Nursing
  • Maternity/Nutrition
  • Culturally congruent care
  • Leadership and critical thinking
  • Gerontology/Rehabilitation nursing
  • Pediatric Nursing/Growth and Development

TERM I
This quarter is designed to provide the students with an orientation to the school and introduce them to the role of the student nurse within the Nursing Profession. Course content is as follows: Fundamentals of nursing, culturally congruent care, end-of-life-care, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, introduction to pharmacology and off-site clinical nursing experience.

TERM II
The nursing student continues to build upon the basics that were taught in Nursing fundamentals. Students will take the principles of anatomy and physiology and relate those to the application of Nutrition and Health on the human body. Students will also gain insight to Administration & Principles of Therapeutic Agents based on the instruction of Pharmacology from the previous quarter. Students will begin to apply the nursing process of adult and geriatric care related to genitourinary, digestive tract, endocrine and dermatological conditions within a laboratory setting. Included in this term is preparation for the medical/surgical areas of training.

TERM III
This quarter introduces nursing students to the concepts of anatomy and physiology, assessment and management of female reproductive disorders, advanced surgical areas of Nursing, basic Pediatric Nursing Care, Infectious diseases, Neurological disorders and Mental Health issues. All nursing skills will be practiced in an on-campus skills lab and clinical externship.

TERM IV
The final quarter finalizes the Nursing cognitive and technical skills for education in Medical Surgical, Gerontology, Infectious Disease, Musculoskeletal function, and special procedures as well as the application of the principles of Pharmacology. This quarter introduces the student to Pediatric Care and Childhood Growth and Development, including Childhood Diseases. This quarter will include a review of the application of Vocational Nursing skills acquired throughout the program, and a comprehensive NCLEX review for the Vocational Nursing Licensure.

VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM PREREQUISITES:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Pass the CPAT Examination
  • Complete a written entrance essay
  • Complete an interview with the Nursing Director
  • Nursing Administrative approval
  • Pass a background check
